Terrier brésilien

From the 19th century to the early 20th century, young Brazilians who went to study at European universities, particularly French and English ones, often came back married to young European women. They brought with them small terriers, probably Fox Terriers and Jack Russell Terriers, which, after adapting to the Brazilian climate, were crossed with indigenous dogs. The Brazilian Terrier is the result of these crosses. With 88 registrations in the French Stud Book (LOF) in 2012, the breed is poorly represented in France.

The Brazilian Terrier is described in the International Cynological Federation (FCI) standard as lively, active and alert, friendly with its family. The Brazilian Terrier is rather wary of strangers. It is an intelligent breed that easily learns tricks.

The Brazilian Terrier is a medium-sized terrier of solid and slender construction. Well proportioned, the body fits within a square. In Brazil, tail docking is traditionally practiced, but the tail can be naturally short or long. The naturally long tail is in fact short since it does not exceed the hock. The limbs are straight viewed from the front. The front legs are slightly more spread than the well-muscled rear legs. The head has a triangular shape when viewed from above: it narrows noticeably from the eyes to the tip of the muzzle. The pronounced stop is accentuated by the slope of the muzzle. The round-shaped eyes are preferably dark-colored, except for the blue variety, where they are gray-blue, and for the brown variety, where they can be brown, green or blue. The triangular ears end in a point. Semi-erect, the point falls in the direction of the external angle of the eye. The ears are not docked. The coat is short, smooth, fine without being soft and well laid down. The coat is finer on the head, ears, under the neck, on the inner face of the front and rear legs. The coat is white marked with black, brown or blue. Tan markings are mandatory above the eyes, on the lateral faces of the muzzle and inside the ears. The head is always marked in the frontal region and on the ears.
