The Pomeranian (also known as Pomeranian or Pom) is a toy size variety of the German Spitz, a dog breed originating from Germany. A miniature dog breed, its name comes from the province of Pomerania, today straddling eastern Germany and Poland. It was adopted by the aristocracy from the 17th century onwards. Queen Victoria owned an orange Pomeranian in 1888, a color that became fashionable then.

Chapter 1

Getting to know the Miniature Spitz

Origins & history

A story told

The German Spitz probably descends from peat dogs of the Stone Age. The Pomeranian became a cherished pet dog and many personalities have owned one: Courteline, Mozart, Michelangelo, Zola, Catherine of Russia, Marie-Antoinette and Josephine de Beauharnais. Only white and black Spitz were known at first, the orange color appeared later. Thomas Gainsborough in the 18th century painted Pomeranians, but it was not until Queen Victoria's reign in the early 19th century that the Pomeranian, as it was then called, dethroned the Pug at the British court. The popularity of the Pomeranian was accompanied in the early 20th century by a tarnishing of its image. In Paris, the Pomeranian is nicknamed the "concierge's dog", because every concierge's lodge had to have its Pomeranian to warn of the presence of a stranger in the building.

Character

Daily temperament

Pomeranians are alert and aware of changes in their environment. Barking at new stimuli can turn into a habit of barking excessively in any situation. They are rather defensive of their territory and can therefore bark when they hear outside noises, which earns them their nickname of "concierge dogs".

Physical

Breed standard

These dogs have been greatly modified by their owners' preferences: their nose is shorter, their size is smaller and they have more fur.

The average life expectancy of Pomeranians is twelve years, but it is not uncommon to see them live up to sixteen or even seventeen years. The Pomeranian is predisposed to several health problems such as:

Maintenance

Daily care

Their eyes tend to tear and therefore you should wipe their eyes regularly. It is recommended to brush them almost daily to prevent their hair from becoming matted. They are not able to take very long walks because they tire quickly. Their nails are therefore little worn by walking and it is necessary to trim them regularly.
