Chapter 1

Getting to know the Medium Spitz

Origins & history

A story told

The German Spitz probably descends from peat bog dogs of the Stone Age. The dwarf variety, more commonly known as the Pomeranian, became popular with the aristocracy from the eighteenth century onwards. In France, only the dwarf spitz is known and the first medium spitz was recorded in the French stud book in 1935.

Character

Daily temperament

The German Spitz is described in the FCI standard as attentive, lively and devoted to its master. It is easy to train although wary of strangers. Hunting instinct may be present, but this can vary from one individual to another. It is not aggressive but can be slightly fearful.

Physical

Breed standard

The Medium Spitz follows the German Spitz standard, which admits five sizes. With a height of 34 cm at the withers, the Medium Spitz represents the intermediate size. All German Spitzes have a body that fits in a square, with a tail set high carried rolled over the back. The head is wedge-shaped, recalling that of a fox. Unlike smaller varieties, the Medium Spitz must have all its teeth. All German Spitzes have a double coat: a long, stiff outer coat and a thick undercoat. The German Spitz has an imposing collar and a plumed tail. The Medium Spitz admits all colors of the German Spitz: black, brown, white, orange, wolf gray and other colors.
