Chapter 1

Getting to know the Spitz finlandais

Origins & history

A story told

The origins of the Finnish Spitz are not clearly defined but it very likely entered Finland in the early Christian era, in the company of nomadic tribes coming from the Asian confines. The breed is selected to be a beautiful hunting dog, giving good voice in the presence of game birds in the trees. It was in 1675 that a French explorer described it for the first time in his travel notes, as it appears to us even today. In the 1890s, the stud book was opened and subjects of well-fixed type and determined utility were found predominantly in the eastern and northern regions of Finland. The first standard was drafted in Finland in 1892 as was the first dog show for the breed. In 1897, the first competition for bird hunting dogs was organized. The breed popular in Sweden and Finland represents an essential element of Finnish culture and was designated 'National Dog of Finland' in 1979. Breeding in France began in 1968.

Character

Daily temperament

Despite its somewhat fierce appearance, it is rather of a sociable nature. However, it has an instinct for danger and shows itself to be an alert and brave watchdog. In hunting, it shows a preference for game birds, particularly the grouse, and its remarkable sense of smell, keen sight, tenacity and cunning make it the precious auxiliary of the hunter which it guides by its barking. Its extremely sensitive temperament requires a balanced education, both firm and gentle. In a harmonious environment, it shows itself to be an intelligent, affectionate and loyal companion. It shares children's games without brutality. For apartment living, good education can temper its natural barking tendency. The standard describes the Finnish Spitz as lively, vigorous, courageous and determined. It can be a little reserved towards strangers, but is never vicious. Aggression is a disqualifying fault in shows.
