Chapter 1

Getting to know the Irish Red and White Setter

Origins & history

A story told

The Red and White Irish Setter is a hunting dog used in Ireland since at least the 17th century. Existing well before the Red Irish Setter, the red and white is quickly eclipsed by the popularity of its single-colour cousin. The Red and White Irish Setter was introduced to France in the late 19th century and the first standard was drafted around 1885. On the brink of extinction, breeding resumed in the 1920s.

Character

Daily temperament

The Red and White Irish Setter is described in the FCI standard as a lively and alert dog, gentle and friendly and yet determined and courageous.

Physical

Breed standard

The Red and White Irish Setter is a large pointer dog of powerful and muscular build. The back is strong and muscular, the chest well descended with sprung ribs: it is more rounded than that of the Red Irish Setter. The tail does not go lower than the hock. Strong at the attachment, it gradually tapers to a fine point. It is carried horizontal or lower. The head is broad in proportion to the body with a domed skull without occipital protuberance and a well-visible stop. The muzzle is square. The oval eyes are slightly prominent, dark hazel or dark brown in colour. The pendulous ears are attached at eye level. The coat is long and silky at the back of the limbs and on the outer part of the ear. The flank and chest are well furnished with hair. The latter form straight, flat fringes. Slight waviness is permitted. The tail is well-fringed. The coat is short, flat and free from curl on all other parts of the body. The coat is white clearly marked with patches of solid red. The colours should be as brilliant as possible. Ticking is permitted on the face, feet, forelegs up to the height of the elbow and hind legs up to the height of the hock.
