Chapter 1

Getting to know the Setter Gordon

Origins & history

A story told

The origins of the Gordon Setter are intertwined with those of spaniels and then setters. In the middle of the 17th century, the breed differentiated itself from other setters and became established at the beginning of the 19th century. Until the 18th century, these dogs were called "lying dogs" because they directed birds toward hunters' nets. The selection was started by Alexander de Gordon. Other bloodlines were created by breeders such as Lord Penmure and Major Douglas of Broughty. The objective was to obtain a skilled stop dog to find game, hardy, with a firm stop and adapted to Scottish terrain. The English Setter and the Colley probably used during the creation of the breed, and perhaps the St. Hubert's dog, the Red and White Irish Setter or even the English Pointer. The Gordon Setter was imported to France around 1840. The Gordon Setter was named for a century Black and Tan Setter in relation to its black and tan coat.

Character

Daily temperament

The FCI standard describes the Gordon Setter as an intelligent, bold, sociable dog, naturally gentle and calm. Education must be carried out without brutality. Of well-tempered character nevertheless, he can be determined and persevering.

Physical

Breed standard

The Gordon Setter is a stop dog of robust and massive construction. The bone structure is vigorous, it is built for galloping. Straight or slightly curved like a saber, the tail that does not exceed the hock is carried horizontally or below the line of the back. The head is higher than it is wide. The skull is slightly larger than the muzzle. The stop is well marked. The eyes are neither too sunken nor prominent, dark brown in color and bright. The medium-sized ears are drooping and attached low. They are fitted with silky fringe on the upper part. On the head, on the front of the limbs and at the tip of the ears the hair is short and fine, but on all other parts of the body, it is of medium length, flat and smooth. The back of the limbs is furnished with long, fine, flat and straight fringes. The belly bears a fringe that can extend to the chest and throat. The coat is intense shiny black charcoal, with vivid red-chestnut tan markings. A very small white spot is allowed on the chest.
