Origins & history
A story told
The Sealyham Terrier derives its name from Sealyham, Haverfordwest (Wales), where Captain John Edwardes' estate was located. He was selecting a variety of dog recognized for its predisposition to hunting small game. He crossed Dandie Dinmont Terriers with English White Terriers (a variety now extinct), Fox Terriers, West Highland White Terriers and Corgis, then tested the hunting qualities of dogs from these crosses, eliminating subjects that did not suit him. The Sealyham became a fashionable dog in Hollywood. Alfred Hitchcock, Jean Harlow, Cary Grant and Elizabeth Taylor owned one, as did Princess Margaret. The breed was very common in England, but its popularity declined with the prohibition of badger hunting. The Sealyham thus became a companion dog and its use for hunting is now anecdotal. The first Club du Sealyham Terrier was created in 1908 and the breed officially recognized in 1910. The Sealyham Terrier is now recognized by major kennel clubs. Once one of the most popular terriers and the most well-known dog breed in Wales, the Sealyham is now listed by the Kennel Club as one of the most endangered native breeds. A Sealyham Terrier, Champion Efbe's Hidalgo At Goodspice, won Best In Show at the Crufts dog show in 2009.
Character
Daily temperament
Vigorous, full of spirit and apt for work, it is lively and fearless but of a friendly nature. Sealyham puppies are ordinarily very active. With age, the Sealyham tends to become lazier and displays an even temperament and very relaxed behaviour. Therefore, it is necessary to watch their weight by managing their diet and giving them some exercise, at minimum a daily walk.
Physical
Breed standard
Overall, it has a body longer than tall and not square. Free in movement, active and well-proportioned, it has plenty of substance in a small volume. The body is of medium length and supple, the back horizontal, the chest broad and high, well descended between the forelegs and the ribs well-sprung. The height at the withers must not exceed 31 cm (12 inches). The ideal weight is approximately 9 kg (20 pounds) for males and approximately 8.2 kg (18 pounds) for females. The general conformation, balance of form, type and substance are essential criteria.
