Chapter 1

Getting to know the Ryūkyū (dog)

Origins & history

A story told

The Ryūkyū Dog originates from Okinawa Island. It was a hunting dog used to hunt down and gather wild boars but also rarely used to hunt birds. Its history is little known and the breed has become rare. In the early twentieth century, it was thought that almost all purebred individuals had disappeared after World War II due to successive shortages on the islands and crossings with other breeds. In the early 1980s, the founder of the Ryūkyū Ken Hozonkai, Yoshio Aragaki, preserved the breed when he found a few purebred specimens in the Yanbaru bamboo grove.
