Chapter 1

Getting to know the Curly-Coated Retriever

Origins & history

A story told

The exact origin of the Curly-Coated Retriever is unknown. It is considered the oldest retriever. It would descend from crosses between the Newfoundland dog and the Irish Water Spaniel which would have transmitted its curled coat to it. The Poodle, the Labrador Retriever, the Old English Bulldog and the Portuguese Water Dog could also have contributed to the formation of the breed. This British breed first appeared at the Brighton dog show in 1859 and the first club of the breed was founded in 1896. The breed is very rare, even in the United Kingdom.

Character

Daily temperament

The International Cynological Federation standard describes the Curly-Coated Retriever as an intelligent, balanced, trustworthy, courageous, friendly, confident and independent dog which can be reserved. Among retrievers, the Curly-Coated Retriever is considered somewhat less sociable than the Labrador, Golden Retriever and Flat-Coated Retriever. The Curly-Coated Retriever also has a reputation for not tolerating other dogs well, so good socialization is necessary.

Physical

Breed standard

The Curly-Coated Retriever is a strong dog. The body length from the point of the shoulder to that of the buttocks is slightly greater than the height at the withers. The tail extends the line of the back and reaches the hock; it is carried straight in action. The head is wedge-shaped. The large oval eyes are colored to match the coat. Rather small, the ears are attached slightly higher than the line of the eyes. Rather small in size, they are well set against the head and covered with short curls. On the body, the coat is short, well laid, dense and curled in small loops without undercoat. The coat is short and smooth on the face. Only two colors are recognized: black and brown.
