Chapter 1

Getting to know the Pudelpointer

Origins & history

A story told

The Pudelpointer is the result of a cross between Pointers and Poodles, without any input from other gun dog breeds. The Poodle was only used during the creation of the first strains in the 19th century.

Character

Daily temperament

The FCI standard describes the Pudelpointer as a dog of balanced character, calm, neither fearful nor aggressive. It should not be afraid of game and gunfire. This breed is joyful, docile and easy to train and would love caresses. The Pudelpointer is a hunting dog and life in the city is not recommended for it.

Physical

Breed standard

The Pudelpointer is a large hunting dog. The ideal type presents the construction of a heavy pointer. The tail extends the croup following a regular line without break. It can be docked for hunting and if legislation permits, the length should then reach the lower edge of the vulva in females or cover the testicles in males. The length of the skull equals that of the muzzle. Of medium size, the drooping ears are attached high, well-fitted to the head. The tip of the ear is slightly rounded. Placed on the sides, the eyes are large and dark amber in color. Covering the entire body, the medium-length coat is hard, tight and well-fitted to the body, with a thick undercoat. The head has a beard and a topknot whose strands curl. The coat should provide protection against cold, water and injuries. The coat is solid black, brown or dead leaf colored. White patches are admitted.
