Chapter 1

Getting to know the Porcelaine (dog)

Origins & history

A story told

The origin of the Porcelaine is not known, although it is probably the oldest dog breed originating from Franche-Comté. It is likely descended from the large white Saint-Hubert hounds of Lorraine, themselves descendants of the white dogs of the king, used in the royal packs during the time of Francis I. Before the French Revolution, white and orange scent hounds were present on the lands of the abbeys of Luxeuil and Cluny. If, after the Revolution, the breed was close to extinction, breeding resumed in the mid-19th century with the help of Swiss breeders. In 1844, similar dogs were called "Briquet francs-comtois". The name Porcelaine is said to have been given by the marquis Théodore de Foudras.

Character

Daily temperament

The FCI standard does not describe a character or temperament typical of the breed. It is an energetic dog during hunting, gentle and friendly in the family, even with children. According to the Société centrale canine, the Porcelaine is a kennel dog that loves to live in the presence of other dogs. Its docile nature facilitates its training. To live in an apartment and tolerate solitude and confinement, appropriate training (learning solitude, housebreaking, etc.) and daily physical exercise are essential.

Physical

Breed standard

The Porcelaine is a medium-sized scent hound built for speed. Well-attached, the moderately strong tail tapers after its birth. Medium in length, the tail is never spiked and is carried slightly curved. The head has a pear shape, with a rounded occipital bump and a flat forehead. The median groove and the breakpoint of the muzzle are marked without exaggeration. The nose is black. The very fine and waved ears end in a point and reach the length of the muzzle. They are attached narrowly above the line of the eye. The eyes are very dark, even black, with a sweet and intelligent expression. Fine and supple, the skin is mottled with numerous black patches. The coat is short, fine, tight and shiny. The coat is white with orange patches of round shape. The orange never extends as a cloak. The ears are speckled. The coat should give an impression of transparency characteristic of porcelain.
