Chapter 1

Getting to know the Pomsky

Origins & history

A story told

The Pomsky is a phenomenon that arrived with social media and the Internet, which gained momentum in the United States from 2011 onwards. A photo showing an adult dog, announced as a cross between a Siberian Husky and a Pomeranian Spitz, went viral, although it was actually a Lapphund dog. The enthusiasm resulting from this photo led American breeders to artificially inseminate their Huskies with Pomeranian Spitz type dogs, in hopes of making the famous Pomsky a reality.

Character

Daily temperament

Behavioral selection criteria are recommended, notably by the International Pomsky Association. According to these criteria, the Pomsky should not be a shy dog, but on the contrary, a confident and sociable dog, toward humans as well as with its peers.

Physical

Breed standard

The Pomsky is a cross, whose appearance varies from one individual to another. There are "small", "dwarf" and "toy" Pomsky. It is selected for its appearance close to that of the Husky (coat), but of reduced size thanks to crossing with the Spitz. The Pomsky should not be confused with the Finnish Lapphund.

The Pomsky does not have an official standard, since it is a cross and not a breed, not yet recognized by the International Association of Cynology. It is an elegant and well-proportioned dog, of medium to small size, having the physical characteristics of the Husky, except for the size. Its musculature is firm, well developed, it does not admit excess weight. The skeletal structure is moderate and proportional to its size. Its body is covered with a good coat. The Pomsky has ease and freedom of movement, without discomfort at the level of the joints. It is a graceful dog, light in its movements. Its ears must be straight, pointed and facing forward. Its brush tail, well supplied or bushy (depending on the type of hair) is generally carried rolled on the back, or straight. It has a frank and confident look. From the point of the shoulder to the point of the hip, the body has a length slightly greater than the height at the withers. The distances from the tip of the nose to the stop and from the stop to the occiput are equal or almost equal. There are 3 different sizes of Pomsky:

the "toy": up to 33 cm, for a maximum weight of 5 kg; the "mini": up to 38 cm, for a weight of up to 8 kg; the "standard": up to 45 cm and 15 kg. All coats exist, according to the criteria of the International Pomsky Association, although coats most similar to those of the Husky are preferred. The coat can be like that of the Husky, short and dense, but also longer like that of the dwarf spitz. It always has double hair, with an undercoat.
