Chapter 1
Getting to know the Poitevin (dog)
Origins & history
A story told
In 1692, the Marquis François de Larrye created a breed close to the Poitevin by crossing native running dogs and English Foxhounds. After the French Revolution, the breed nearly became extinct and it was in the mid-19th century that wolf hunters from Poitou selected the Poitevin from the Ceris and Montembœuf, two now-extinct breeds whose ancestors date back to the Grenier or white dog of the king.
Character
Daily temperament
The FCI standard does not describe a typical temperament for the breed. The Poitevin is an enduring, dynamic dog, passionate about hunting. During its training, it is necessary to teach it not to abandon pursued game for another. It is a very sporty dog that requires regular physical activity if it does not hunt. It loves living in packs and cannot tolerate solitude. It is therefore strongly discouraged to have it live in the city. The Poitevin is very affectionate, even with children whom it tends to protect.
Physical
Breed standard
The Poitevin is a large running dog with a graceful and elegant appearance. The medium-length tail is fine and not spiky, attached to the loin and carried in a slight curve. The head is elongated with a tapered muzzle. The protruding bones form a slight small bump behind the skull. The drooping ears are fine and slightly turned, attached low, they are of medium width and medium-long. The large eyes are brown ringed with black. The coat is short and glossy. The coat is always tricolor, white background with large black and orange patches. The loup coat is frequent.
