The Miniature Pinscher is a small dwarf dog that was originally created as a ratting dog, to eliminate pests and, in particular, rats. In its native region, Germany, this dog is known as the Zwergpinscher. The Miniature Pinscher is often confused with the Prague Ratter, a breed with a similar physique to the Pinscher. Today, it is widely raised as a companion animal.

Chapter 1

Getting to know the Miniature Pinscher

Origins & history

A story told

This dwarf dog belongs to a very ancient hunting dog breed from Germany. From the 16th century, its ancestors were used to hunt rats and had the reputation of courageous and alert guard and stable dogs. Several pictorial works from the Renaissance and Baroque periods by Flemish painter Jan Bruegel, Albrecht Dürer or Carle Vernet would represent these dogs also called "Stable Griffons", and which are appreciated up to Versailles. This dwarf dog breed quickly gained popularity among farmers due to their intelligence, small size and agility. The Miniature Pinscher is a reduced model of the German Pinscher free from any growth disorder of dwarfism. Already in the early 20th century, the number of Miniature Pinschers was significant, and by 1925, the book of origins already had 1,300 registrations of this breed. From the numerous color varieties, as with the German Pinscher, dogs of black color with lighter markings and unicolored dogs ranging from red to brownish are selected. Germany's first dog show is held in Hanover in 1878, and it is in 1900 that small-sized Pinschers are seen at the Stuttgart show. The first standard was drawn up in 1880 by Richard Strebel. In July 1955, the breed was permanently recognized by the International Cynological Federation.

Character

Daily temperament

The Miniature Pinscher is a very intelligent small dog, full of confidence, energy and fond of movement. It has a lot of courage, confidence and alertness. It is a dog that has an interesting weight/power ratio, which makes it a very effective dog. This breed has a huge predisposition to learning and, thanks to its great ability to understand, it is easy to train. These attentive dogs should be allowed to indulge their curiosity and explore the terrain around them.

Physical

Breed standard

Just like the German Pinscher, its morphology fits into a square, which means that the height and length of its body are approximately the same proportion. The total length of its head corresponds to half the length between the withers and the tail attachment. The body is very muscular and elegant. The coat is short and smooth. Its coat color is most often black and tan or brown and tan with short, smooth, shiny and well-stocked hair. Miniature Pinschers are hardy dogs that show no fragility in terms of longevity or reproduction; litters average between four and six puppies, and females rarely require cesarean sections.

Health

Health watch

Despite its small size, the Pinscher is hardy and relatively insensitive to disease. However, its fine legs present a relative fragility. Furthermore, it is a good eater that has a tendency to obesity, which increases the risks to its small legs.

It is important to be careful by monitoring its diet. It can sometimes happen that the Pinscher shows a weakness in terms of eye sensitivity and also dry skin. Grooming is facilitated by its very short coat, which requires little attention. On the other hand, it must be covered when it is cold because its coat does not always give it sufficient protection. The Miniature Pinscher is a generally healthy dog breed with an average life expectancy of about 15 years.
