The Phalène is the ancestor of the Papillon Spaniel and one of two varieties of the Continental Toy Spaniel.

Of Franco-Belgian origin, it was very popular in the royal courts of Europe and is depicted in many paintings by Renaissance masters. Today it is a rare small dog (fewer than 70 births per year) and only a few breeders remain in France and abroad.
