Chapter 1

Getting to know the Pomeranian

Origins & history

A story told

The German Spitz probably descends from Paleolithic peat dogs. The dwarf variety, better known as the Pomeranian, became popular among the aristocracy from the 18th century onwards. The first Pomeranians were registered in the LOF (French Book of Origins) in 1889. They were only of medium size and white color. In France, the first Small Spitz was registered for the first time in the French Book of Origins (LOF) in 1935.

Character

Daily temperament

The German Spitz is described in the FCI standard as attentive, lively and attached to its master. It is easy to train although wary of strangers. The hunting instinct is absent. It is quite fearful but not very aggressive. It is very lively and enjoys playing.

Physical

Breed standard

The Small Spitz follows the standard of the German Spitz, which admits five sizes. With 26 cm ± 3 cm height at the withers, the Small Spitz represents the second smallest size. All German Spitzes have a body that fits in a square, with a tail attached high and carried curled over the back. The head is wedge-shaped reminiscent of a fox's with lively, medium-sized eyes and dark-colored small triangular ears placed close together. The absence of a limited number of premolars is tolerated. The standard specifies that for the Small Spitz, the ratio between muzzle length and skull length is approximately one half. All German Spitzes have a double coat: as topcoat, a long, stiff and spread hair, and as undercoat a sort of thick and short wadding. This double coat does not cover the head, ears or front faces of the limbs and feet, covered with short and dense hair resembling velvet. The German Spitz possesses an imposing ruff, like a mane and a plume tail. The Small Spitz admits all colors of the German Spitz:

Black: the undercoat and skin are dark colored. The color is jet black without trace of white and without any marking. Brown: it is a uniform dark brown. White: pure white, without any shade, without any yellowish tint on the ears. Orange: uniform orange color in a medium shade. Grey-wolf: The hair is silver-grey charred, that is the tip of the hair is black. The muzzle and ears are dark. The mane and shoulder region are lighter. Below the elbows and knees, the limbs are silver-grey without black spots with the exception of "pencilling". The tip of the tail is black. The underside of the tail and the knickers are light silver-grey. A characteristic "spectacle" design appears on the face: a line of black at an angle from the outer corner of the eye to the lower attachment point of the ear, associated with neat hatchings and shaded gradations forming short and expressive eyebrows. Other colors: other shades than those above. This includes cream, cream sable, orange sable, black and tan and parti-color (multicolored coat).
