Getting to know the Small Munsterlander

Origins & history

A story told

The Small Münsterland Pointer is a versatile dog traditionally used in Westphalia from the eighteenth century. This spaniel was used for hunting, livestock herding, and as a guard dog. In the nineteenth century, crossbreeds with Langhaar were carried out in the city of Münster. The selection of the Small Münsterland Pointer has been distinct from that of the Large Münsterland Pointer, although they share the same geographical origin and the use of Langhaar as a cross.

Character

Daily temperament

The FCI standard describes the Small Münsterland Pointer as an intelligent, balanced, stable dog. This breed is attentive and friendly toward humans and easy to socialize. The Small Münsterland Pointer can live in an apartment provided it benefits from daily outings.

Physical

Breed standard

The Small Münsterland Pointer is a medium-sized spaniel with a powerful, harmonious, noble, and elegant appearance, with balanced proportions. The length of the body, measured from the tip of the sternum to the tip of the buttock, does not exceed the height at the shoulder by more than 5 cm. The tail, lined with a long fringe, is carried horizontally in action and drooping at rest. Medium in size, the eyes are neither protruding nor sunken in the orbits, the color of the iris is preferably dark brown. Attached high, the large ears are drooping, well-fitted to the head. They end in a point and do not exceed the commissure of the lips. The coat is shiny, smooth to slightly wavy and medium in length. The coat is brown and white, brown roan with large brown patches, a mantle, speckles. A white blaze is admitted. Fire marks often appear on the muzzle and eye.
