Getting to know the Swiss Miniature Hound

Origins & history

A story told

The Small Swiss Hound is descended from the Swiss Hound, an ancient breed whose origin dates back to hunting dogs from the Nile Valley in ancient Egypt that were introduced to Europe by Phoenician merchants and spread throughout Switzerland by Roman legions. In the early 20th century, the system of reserved hunting grounds was introduced in several Swiss cantons. Hunters then estimated that Swiss hunting hounds were too fast for these hunting areas and decided to create a smaller dog breed through methodical selection. The Swiss club for small hunting hounds was founded on June 1, 1905 under the name "Swiss Basset Club."

Character

Daily temperament

The Swiss hunting hound is described by the FCI standard as passionate about hunting, with a calm to lively temperament, neither fearful nor aggressive.

Physical

Breed standard

The Small Swiss Hound is a small hunting hound, described in the International Canine Federation (FCI) standard as a smaller version of the Swiss Hound. Inscribed in a rectangle, the body is of medium length, built powerfully. The thoracic cage is moderately wide, well-descended and spacious. The limbs are dry and robust. Attached low in line with the croup, the tail reaches at least the hock and tapers at the tip. Carried drooping, the tail rises slightly when the dog is in action. The head of medium size is dry and noble. Very long drooping ears, well pleated, are attached low and well fitted to the head. The eyes are dark in color and slightly oval in shape. There are two types of coat: smooth hair and hard hair. The first type should be short, smooth, well-laid and finer on the head and ears. The hard coat is hard to the touch, flexible, well-laid with little undercoat. It forms with a fairly underdeveloped beard. There are four coat colors, symbolized by the four varieties of Small Swiss Hound:

The Small Bernese Hound can have smooth or hard hair. The base color is white with large black patches that can form a mantle and possibly some black ticking. Tan markings are present above the eyes, on the cheeks, on the inside and top of the ears, and around the anus. The Small Jura Hound has smooth hair and rarely a double coat. The coat is preferably black with tan markings of a reddish-brown above the eyes, on the cheeks, chest and limbs. It can also be fawn with a black mantle or saddle. A white spot on the chest is tolerated if not too extensive. The Small Lucerne Hound has smooth hair. The base color is blue, that is to say finely speckled with gray, white and black. Black patches or a mantle may mark the coat. Tan markings of a reddish-brown color are present above the eyes, on the cheeks, at the base of the tail, on the chest and on the limbs. The Small Schwytz Hound has smooth hair. The coat is white with patches or a mantle of yellow-red to red-orange color. Isolated speckles of red-orange color are admitted.
