Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen

The Vendéen Griffons descend from the white variety of the old Saint Hubert pack. It is derived from the Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen. In 1947, Abel Desamy began the selection of small Bassets and established a first standard.

The FCI standard describes the Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen as a docile, willing, courageous and passionate hunting dog. It is a tenacious and confident dog that must be trained from a young age to recall. Education must be firm and requires much patience, but is considered easy to train in comparison to other hound dogs. The Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen loves open spaces and should benefit from frequent outings to accommodate city living.

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen is a very slightly longilinear Basset with straight limbs. Rather large at birth, the tail of short length tapers regularly to its tip. Attached high, it is carried like a saber blade. The head is well-rounded without being too wide, expressive, with a slightly domed skull and a well-defined stop. Large dark eyes are topped with a fringe coming forward. Attached below the eye line, the soft, narrow and fine ears are covered with long hair. Slightly oval at the end, they are turned inward and do not quite reach the tip of the muzzle. The rough and textured coat is neither silky nor woolly. Twelve coat colors are allowed by the standard: white and black, black and tan, black and sable, white and orange, tricolor, fawn charcoal, sable charcoal, white and sable charcoal.
