Getting to know the Perro fino Colombiano

Origins & history

A story told

The Colombian "Fino" is a variety of dogs developed in Colombia, coming from foreign breeds (mainly European and American scenthounds) introduced to the country from colonial times to the twentieth century. Because of the geographic isolation suffered by the country during its history, it led to a great diversity of existing scenthounds that, even today, are preserved. One can speak of genetic foci such as that of "la hoya Rio Suarez", the "Eastern Plains" and the plains of the Cauca River and the Sinú River, the mountains of Antioquia, the Atlantic coast, and the Magdalena River (Colombia). Thanks to their good sense of smell and adaptation to the different conditions of Colombian regions, they have been recognized in the field of hunting since the beginning, present in the memory of Colombian farmers and known for over 200 years by peasants and hunters. These dogs serve mainly as hunters of rodents such as paca, agouti, capybara, and other furred animals. Thanks to their abilities, their distribution is vast: they can be found in all regions of Colombia. This non-worldwide recognized breed is similar to some already existing breeds. Nevertheless, rural communities differentiate them from other breeds through their build and numerous skills that make them unique.

Its skin is generally thick and its tail is long, saber-shaped, tapering as it reaches the tip. It is a very resistant animal that can accompany hunting days for long hours and on any terrain.
