Chapter 1

Getting to know the Burgos Pointer

Origins & history

A story told

There are two hypotheses to explain the origin of the Perdiguero de Burgos. The first traces the breed to native dogs from Burgos in Northern Spain. The second considers that the breed resulted from crosses between an Iberian hunting dog and the Spanish scent hound. The first description of a pointer resembling the Perdiguero de Burgos is attributed to Alonso Martinez de Espinar, master of the crossbowmen of King Philip IV, in Dialogue on the Art of Hunting and Big Game Hunting in the 17th century.

Character

Daily temperament

The FCI standard of the Perdiguero de Burgos describes it as a rustic, balanced, composed, docile and intelligent dog.

Physical

Breed standard

The Perdiguero de Burgos is a medium to large-sized pointer with a compact trunk and sturdy limbs. Working type is favored over beauty. Thick at the base, the tail is set at medium height. When legislation permits, it is docked between one-third and one-half of its length. The well-developed head is equipped with long, pendulous ears of triangular shape. Medium-sized, almond-shaped, the eyes are hazel in color, preferably dark. The coat is tight, short, smooth and distributed over the entire body down to between the toes. The coat is finer on the head, ears and extremities. The coat colors are white and liver. The distribution of the two colors is highly variable, ranging from large patches of color to ticking. A white spot on the forehead is common while the ears are always solid liver.
