Chapter 1

Getting to know the Pekingese (dog)

Origins & history

A story told

The Pekingese was the preferred companion dog of the Chinese imperial court at the Forbidden City, particularly under the Qing Dynasty between 1644 and 1912. It is often depicted in the works of art of the time. The Chinese seem to have selected this dog to give it the same appearance as lion statues. The commercialization of the breed is prohibited outside the borders of China, but British officers bring it to Europe in the 19th century, exporting two pairs. A rumor circulates that a specimen of Pekingese was given to Queen Victoria who baptized it Looty, but this is a false story told in a magazine by Singapore Airlines. The Pekingese is first exhibited at an exhibition in 1864 and is registered with the British Kennel Club in 1898. It is at the end of the 19th century that it spreads to the continent, notably in France and in the German Empire.
