Chapter 1

Getting to know the Norwich Terrier

Origins & history

A story told

At the end of the nineteenth century, in England, F. Jones, kennel master, is said to have created the Norwich Terrier from local dogs. The breed would be the result of a "mixture" of the Glen of Imaal Terrier, the Cairn Terrier of the Dandie Dinmont Terrier... with the aim of tracking foxes, badgers and rabbits in galleries. Rather intrepid, he did not hesitate to enter the burrows to dislodge their inhabitants. It disappeared after World War II, however, expert crosses with other terrier breeds allowed this breed to be reborn. Until about the middle of the 19th century, the Norwich Terrier was not clearly distinguished from the Norfolk Terrier. Both originate from the same region in England and are physically almost identical except for the set of their ears; the Norwich terrier has erect ears while those of the Norfolk are semi-drooping. Now mainly used as a companion and show dog. It was integrated into the English Kennel Club registry in 1932. It was definitively recognized by the International Cynological Federation (FCI) on October 16, 1954.

The Norwich Terrier is one of the dog breeds that are stripped. Stripping involves removing the dead undercoat of the animal. This technique does not cause pain to the dog. The harder the dog's coat, the less complete stripping is necessary. With a hard coat, daily brushing and removal of overly long hair with a stripping knife two to three times a week is sufficient.
