The term molossus dates back to antiquity and derives from the Molossian people living in Epirus who provided Alexander the Great with his dog Peritas. According to the nomenclature of the International Canine Federation, the majority of molosses belong to group 2 of which they make up the second section. This is divided into two subsections, mastiff-type molossus and mountain-type molossus. As for small molosses, they belong to the eighth section of group 9 of companion dogs.
