Origins & history
A story told
For a long time, the Mastiffs of Naples have lived in the south of the Italian peninsula. These imposing molossers display far from good-natured profiles: the majority are fierce. The Romans used them in circus games. After animals were replaced by men in the competitions, the mastiffs found new utility in becoming guard dogs, especially in the south of the country where their qualities were particularly appreciated. They were later found guarding bulls and buffaloes, then as guard and police dogs. In the 19th century the breed began gradually to disappear, which is when Dr. Ruggero Soldati decided to draft a breed standard, becoming one of the important pillars against the extinction of the breed. It was in 1956 that the ENCI recognized the Neapolitan Mastiff. The breed experienced a resurgence after World War II.
Character
Daily temperament
A dog of strong character, the Neapolitan Mastiff requires good education. Without appropriate education the Neapolitan Mastiff can prove aggressive and temperamental. It is an excellent guard dog. The Neapolitan Mastiff is a dog which, if well educated, is loyal and devoted. Extremely suspicious of strangers, the Neapolitan Mastiff is intimidating with other dogs and cohabitation between two males can prove difficult. This moloss adores its master but will not tolerate threats. The Neapolitan Mastiff has a great need for space and apartment living does not suit it at all. It also needs a lot of exercise daily.
Physical
Breed standard
A powerful and massive dog, its body is stocky and heavy. Its head is large and massive and its neck is short and muscular. Its skin is wrinkled, especially on the head and neck, where it forms a double dewlap. Its coat is short, smooth and tight. The Neapolitan Mastiff's coat can be grey, black, brown, but also leaden-grey, fawn, or deer (intense fawn). All these colors can be brindled and white patches are accepted on the chest and toes. The standard also tolerates hazel, dove-grey and Isabella tones.
