Chapter 1

Getting to know the Pyrenean Mastiff

Origins & history

A story told

For a very long time the Pyrenean Mastiff accompanied sheep herds in their transhumant journeys from the Aragonese Pyrenees and Navarre to the Maestrazgo. Its main function was to protect the flocks and their masters from attacks by wolves and bears. During the twentieth century, the Mastiff declined due to the high cost of maintaining such a large dog. In the 1970s, a group of enthusiasts initiated recovery work on the breed. In 1977, the Club of the Pyrenean Mastiff of Spain was founded, which organizes selection and international programs. In France, the Association of Lovers of Pyrenean Dogs has been looking after the interests of the breed since 1986.

Physical

Breed standard

The Pyrenean Mastiff is a large dog: according to the breed standard, males must measure more than 77 cm and females more than 72 cm. The body is covered with a thick and long coat, white in color, with darker patches on the entire body.
