Chapter 1

Getting to know the Lévrier persan

Origins & history

A story told

The Saluki has existed for thousands of years. According to Persian tradition, Salukis are neither sold nor bought but only given as a mark of honor.

Character

Daily temperament

This large sighthound is known for its rather calm and sensitive nature, which allows it to maintain control of its hunting. It is a sociable dog, but reserved. It does not show its affection like other dogs. It will be shy in its interactions with its master. Docile, it will be affectionate with its human, without being a "clingy" dog. It will remain wary of strangers. It gets along well with children and can even protect them, but the family must respect it because it needs times of calm and rest alone. The nobility of its line and its particularly calm nature should not overshadow the Saluki's past. For generations, its ancestors were bred as sighthounds for princes and the powerful: its predatory instinct can then be very developed. Both a hunting and companion dog, it lives poorly with solitude, even for a few hours: this is therefore something that must be worked on gently and in stages. The Saluki does not particularly enjoy sleeping outside, for example, and will not hesitate to let you know, in fact. It prefers sofas and thick pillows like many sighthounds. Another concern of the Saluki: its ancestral hunting instinct, which drives it to run away fairly regularly if its needs, particularly for exploration, are not met. It is best to plan a high fence (approximately 2.50 m) to secure your garden (a 1.60 m high mesh fence is not a concern for it). The Saluki needs regular exercise, but behaves quietly indoors. It does not bark unless there is a reason when it feels that something is not right or when a family member is absent for a long period of time.

Physical

Breed standard

It is recognized by its short coat, except at the level of the ears, paws and tail, where it is long. Its hair is smooth and silky, practically all colors are accepted. There are two varieties:
