Chapter 1
Getting to know the Lévrier afghan
Origins & history
A story told
Certainly very ancient, the origins of the Afghan Hound are still quite obscure. Afghan populations were highly nomadic. They were close to Bactria, that is to say Samarkand, a meeting point of peoples and civilizations. They undoubtedly crossed the Kyrgyz who for millennia have hunted with sighthounds (Kyrgyz Hound). The Bakhmull, sighthound of the Afghan mountains, originating from the Mongolian steppes, may have also contributed to the creation of the Afghan Hound. It is also worth noting that Afghanistan knew other sighthounds: the short-haired Luchak (Sloughi) and the Kalakh (Saluki-Tazi) with fringed coat. Rock drawings representing Afghan Hounds of a type existing in 2200 BC are said to have been discovered in the Balkh region, in north-west Afghanistan. In the 1880s, British soldiers returning from the Anglo-Afghan War brought back Afghan Hounds. The English Kennel Club established the first standard and created a genealogical record in the early twentieth century. English imports began steadily from 1920. The breed was introduced to France around 1930. The Afghan was represented by an oil painting by Salvador Dalí in 1938. The work is titled "Invisible Afghan with Appearance on the Beach of the Face of Garcia Lorca as Compote with Three Figures".
Character
Daily temperament
The Afghan Hound or Tazi has a character that is both happy and calm, sensitive, confident, determined, and rather a good guardian. It shows itself to be very independent but deeply attached to its master and distant to strangers. However, it gets along wonderfully with children and its fellow dogs. Like any sighthound, it must imperatively be able to exert itself and run often to maintain its balance and stay in shape. The independence of the Afghan Hound makes it quite difficult to train: it is recommended to arm yourself with patience and a little experience if you plan to educate one.
Physical
Breed standard
The Afghan is a sighthound. Its height ranges from 68 to 74 cm at the shoulder for males, and from 63 to 69 cm for females. Its weight varies up to 28 kg. Its general appearance combines power with elegance underlined by a sumptuous long, silky coat of fine texture, a supple and elastic gait, and an aristocratic head carriage. The Oriental expression is typical of the breed. Its coat is much shorter on the face and back (saddle). If all coat colors are admitted, it can have a black mask on the face that stands out from the background of its coat. The most appreciated colors range from sand to golden.

In the West, it generally passes for a luxury and companion dog which, moreover, does not disdain racing on racetracks. In its country of origin and in neighboring regions, it hunts deer, gazelle, wolf, fox, and snow leopard. It is also used to guard and oversee herds.

Health
Health watch
Its grooming is demanding if you want to keep the long hair. For this it is necessary to prevent the hair from becoming tangled and forming dreadlocks. Brushing alone will rarely be sufficient and must be supplemented by baths with shampoo and conditioner with suitable pH.

The puppy must be gradually accustomed to this, but very early, otherwise it will not accept this constraint in adulthood. There are two approaches to the frequency of care:
one bath every two or three weeks and daily brushing or one bath every week or even twice a week and no brushing in between. It is devoid of odor, like all sighthounds. Dry the dog with a large terry towel and finish with a hair dryer while brushing. Some very dry coats need to be oiled the day before bathing. In this case, the dog must wear a garment to preserve your home. If you wish to have your dog compete in shows or give it a refined appearance, you will need to pluck the hair on the muzzle, "the saddle" in the middle of the back and the tail. This is a tedious task to which the dog must also be accustomed. All of this implies a material investment and constant effort on the part of the owner. It is nevertheless possible to entrust your dog to a groomer, making sure however that the latter knows the requirements of the breed standard. To acquire the necessary technique yourself, it is useful to seek advice from an experienced breeder or follow a training course. To make the work easier, you can put a raincoat on your dog on rainy days. You should also protect the ears with long fringes at mealtimes with a kind of special sleeve called a snood. But if you feel unable or no longer able to assume the long coat, it is better to cut the dog than to let it transform into a pile of dirt that will soon be covered in parasites.
