The Leavitt Bulldog is the re-creation of the Old English Bulldog from the late 20th century, as the breed was in the early 19th century during the Regency period, around 1820. In contrast to the English Bulldog of today, the description of the breed nearly two hundred years earlier showed dogs in better health, more agile, with definite work capacity. Unlike the breed of the 19th century, the Leavitt Bulldog has a placid temperament. Mr.

Leavitt stated: "I did not want the temperament of the original Bulldog. My dogs must be very affectionate. They must have courage and determination, without being excessively aggressive. I found that I could not count on future buyers to properly channel their dogs. To avoid all unpleasantness, I worked on the friendly side of the dog and if someone wants their dog to be aggressive, they will need to train it for that. I prefer to teach a friendly dog to bite, than the opposite." The Leavitt Bulldog was developed by breeder David Leavitt, originally called the Olde English Bulldogge. Following the development of breed standards, the breed diverged in appearance from the original lines, which led to the name change and the creation of a separate breeder association.

Origins & history
A story told
The new breed was renamed in 2005 because Mr. Leavitt felt that his creation, the Olde English Bulldogge of 1971, was not being preserved as he intended. The descendants of the breed as of 1971 had become heavier and many breeders did not respect the original standard. Breeders who worked with Mr. Leavitt's original idea were invited to join the new Leavitt Bulldog Association. The LBA and its members are committed to maintaining and improving the health, temperament and work aptitude of the breed through a selective breeding program. The association offers a pedigree service and maintains a registry of dogs. After its rejection for entry into the United Kennel Club, the association decided to go its own way, without recognition from an official club. This independence allows association members to remain free to use outcrossing when necessary, in order to maintain healthy genetic diversity.

According to the breed standard, the Leavitt Bulldog has a broad head (the head circumference must be at least equal to the height of the dog at the withers), with powerful jaw muscles. The lower jaw must be undershot. The back and chest are broad and muscular. The tail is straight and should touch the hock.
