The Laobé is a versatile dog originating from West Africa. It is sometimes nicknamed yellow dog. A dog of ancient origin, it takes its name from the Laobés whose protection it ensured and whom it warned of dangers. Like the Basenji in Central Africa or the Africanis in Southern Africa, it would descend from ancient Egyptian dogs. It is the most common dog in West Africa.

The original color of its coat varies from sandy to fawn but due to successive crosses with imported breeds, today they are found in all colors. It is often described as a dog with yellow coat and short ears. In 1780, Jean-François de La Harpe, in his Abrégé de l'Histoire Générale des Voyages describes the Laobé as a dog that does not bark but whose cry resembles a howl. It is a versatile dog that was initially selected by West African populations for hunting and guarding goods, families and livestock. It was gradually rejected from colonization onwards and became commensal and semi-wild.
