The Kuvasz is a very ancient dog breed that appeared in Hungary in the 13th century. It is believed to originate from Tibet, though its exact origin is unknown. The breed is related to the Abruzzo Shepherd Dog, the Polish Podhale-Tatra Shepherd, or the Pyrenean Mountain Dog.

In 2011, under the government of Viktor Orbán, Hungary adopted a dog tax, from which the Kuvasz (as well as other Hungarian dog breeds) was exempted on the grounds of being a 'Hungarian breed,' in the sense of Greater Hungary.

Chapter 1

Getting to know the Kuvasz

Character

Daily temperament

It is intelligent, protective, observant, and very close to its master. The Kuvasz is courageous. Its fearless nature led it to confront bears, wolves, coyotes, and other predators to protect its own and the flocks. But one must not forget that it is above all a guard dog, and its firm training must allow it, while being protective and discouraging, to be friendly with those close to it and in situations of meeting other dogs and of course humans outside its home.

Physical

Breed standard

According to the FCI international standard, it measures between 66 and 70 cm for females and between 71 and 76 cm for males; it weighs between 37 and 50 kg for females and between 48 and 62 kg for males. Its coat is medium-long, dense, and wavy. Its coloration is preferably pure white, but ivory is admitted by the official standard. It has an elongated but not pointed head, a straight muzzle, and a large black nose. The ears should be V-shaped with a rounded tip. It has a long tail raised when alert.
