The breed is said to have been developed after World War II by a German breeder, Mrs. Ilse Scheifenbaum, following a cross between a large Vendée Griffon and a Wire Fox Terrier. The Kromfohrländer was recognized internationally as early as 1955.

The Kromfohrländer is a lively, affectionate, sturdy, faithful and docile dog. Fairly obedient, it is a good hunting dog, but also a guard and companion dog. It loves to play with its family and fellow dogs.
