Chapter 1

Getting to know the Kishu (dog)

Origins & history

A story told

The Kishu traces its origin to medium-sized dogs that once existed in Japan. The breed became established in the mountainous regions of Kishu (formerly Kii Province), from which it takes its name. Originally, the coat had markings of red or sesame color and brindle patterns. From 1934 onward, only solid-colored coats are accepted, and other varieties were eliminated through artificial selection by 1945. In 1934, this breed was declared a "Natural Monument."

Character

Daily temperament

The temperament is described in the breed standard as faithful, docile and very alert. It is an enduring, dignified and natural breed.

Physical

Breed standard

The Kishu is a medium-sized dog, compact and well-proportioned. The musculature is well developed; it is a dog of robust build with solid bone structure, which does not prevent it from having light and elastic movement. The tail is curled or sickle-shaped. The well-spaced eyes are relatively small and almost triangular in shape, dark brown in color. Small and triangular, the ears are slightly inclined forward and firmly erect. The guard hair is harsh and straight, with a soft and dense undercoat. On the cheeks and tail, the hair is quite long. The allowed colors are white, red and sesame (red-fawn hairs with black tips).
