Getting to know the Kintamani (dog)
Origins & history
A story told
The Kintamani is a dog originating from the province of Kintamani in Bali and more precisely from the village of Sukawana not far from Mount Batur. The Kintamani breed is an evolution of wild Balinese dogs. A local legend claims that the Kintamani dog is a descendant of a Chow-Chow that would have been brought to the island in the thirteenth century by a Chinese merchant named Lee who would have mixed his Chow-Chow with wild Balinese dogs. Proof that Lee had lived in Kintamani is that there is a Chinese temple of Confucian faith in the province, within the grounds of the Pura Ulun Danu Batur. However, it is more likely that the Kintamani was crossed with the dogs of Javanese invaders of the Majapahit kingdom during the fourteenth century or with those of Javanese refugees of the fifteenth century.
Character
Daily temperament
It is curious and affectionate with its master and family but can show aggression and shyness towards other people. Probably because of the fact that it has origins of wild dog, it likes to climb roofs and dig burrows.
