The King Charles Spaniel, or King Charles Spaniel, is a breed of English toy spaniel dogs and companions. It should not be confused with its more common cousin the Cavalier King Charles. They belong to the same lineage, but the King is smaller, has a square silhouette from the side (more coby say the British) and has a flat face. It is also calmer and therefore is sometimes called a "cat-dog". There are only 3,000 King Charles specimens in the world because reproduction is more difficult.

Getting to know the King Charles Spaniel

Origins & history

A story told

Traces of King Charles Spaniels have been found in documents dating from the 16th century. Its history is undoubtedly linked to that of royalty, as is that of other English toy spaniels. Already appreciated during the reign of his father Charles I of England, his brother James II, his grandfather James I, and his grandmother Mary, Queen of Scotland, it was however the King of England Charles II (1630-1685) who marked their history the most. Loving above all his miniature spaniels, he owned a great many of them that circulated in the royal palaces and enjoyed a privileged status. The sovereign even went so far as to raise puppies in his chamber. Present and appreciated at the king's court where they keep warm and company with the ladies, these dogs were subsequently given the name of King Charles Spaniel in homage to the king. However, the King Charles of the royal family possessed a pointed nose and not a flat one like today's King Charles. In 1923, a King Charles Spaniel more resembling the paintings of the 16th and 17th centuries resurfaced, with a longer nose, and a less rounded skull. This is the Cavalier King Charles. Indeed, with the arrival of the competition from pugs and Pekingese which possess a flat nose, the King Charles had to follow this fashion. Breeders had to create spaniels with a shorter nose, which took the name of King Charles to the detriment of the King Charles said of the old type. They were later divided into several families according to their colors. History tells us that the Duchess Sarah, wife of John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough, worried about knowing the fate of the duke at the end of the Battle of Blenheim, caressed the forehead of a female King Charles of white and fawn colors, to reassure herself. This female gave birth the next day and all the puppies had a spot on their forehead, as if it were the imprint left by the duchess's thumb. Not all King Charles have this famous "spot", but it is considered a "plus" if a "Blenheim" has one. These little spaniels are intimately linked to the life of English nobility. The physician of Elizabeth I, Doctor Caïus, described them as "kind and charming comforters", he attributed to them the power to cure stomach ailments and anxieties. This is why in England they are also called "comforters". Today's King Charles is a new breed, completely recreated in 1926 and formalized in 1945.

Black and tan (black and red); Tricolor (black, white & red); Ruby (red coat); Blenheim (red and white). The King Charles is an endearing companion, affectionate, endearing, peaceful, docile, cheerful, non-aggressive, easy-going and friendly both to those close to him and to strangers. But it can also be a dynamic dog that loves games, walks or agility. It loves to play with children, it is a companion that will never hurt them. Aggression does not seem to be part of its genes, and even when disturbed, or even treated somewhat roughly (as children often do), it merely looks at the person with a dazed look, seeming to ask what is wanted of it. Being not only a dog suitable for children, it is also the ideal confidant of an elderly person. Whether the King is male or female, his character is quite similar. But since the King has an extraordinary strength of character, his behavior will be influenced by his environment: he will be quite "crazy crazy" in the presence of children or people who play a lot with him, but he will be calm and of a more peaceful character if he lives with an elderly person. The breed is much less affected by hereditary diseases that affect its cousin the Cavalier King Charles, due to herd control used for reproduction. Its lifespan frequently exceeds ten years, the maintenance of its coat, ears, and nails are within everyone's reach.
