Chapter 1

Getting to know the Sakhalin Husky

Origins & history

A story told

The name Karafuto-ken comes from Karafuto, the Japanese name for Sakhalin (the island of origin of this breed), and "ken", the Japanese word for dog.

Physical

Breed standard

The Sakhalin Husky is a non-standardized Spitz-type dog breed, similar to other dogs originating from Japan such as the Akita Inu. Its size ranges from 56 to 66 cm at the withers and it weighs 30 to 40 kg. The Sakhalin Husky's ears are small and pointed. This breed exists in many colors, and its coat is fine and its coat is very dense, like that of the Greenland dog. Like the Alaskan Husky, it is not referenced by the FCI, being probably descended from a cross between the Japanese Spitz and the Akita, two Spitz breeds.
