Getting to know the Hokkaido (dog)
Origins & history
A story told
Legend has it that this breed is descended from medium-sized Japanese dogs accompanying emigrants from Honshu to Hokkaido during the Kamakura Period (12th-14th centuries). This breed is declared a "Natural Monument" in 1937 and takes the name of the region from which it originates: Hokkaido. It is known by the name "Ainu-ken", named after the Ainu people who used these dogs for bear hunting.
Character
Daily temperament
The Hokkaido is described as showing dignity and natural bearing. It is loyal, obedient, attentive and bold. Its morphology allows it to withstand the cold and support heavy snowfalls. Its endurance is emphasized.
Physical
Breed standard
The Hokkaido is a medium-sized dog, well proportioned and of robust constitution. The skeletal structure is solid and the muscles are tonic. Secondary sexual characteristics are very pronounced. The eyes are fairly small, of almost triangular shape, well spaced and dark brown in color. The small ears are also of triangular shape, slightly inclined forward and erect. The tail is set high, thick, carried on the back curled or curved in a sickle shape. The outer coat is harsh and straight with a soft and dense undercoat. The colors accepted by the standard are sesame (fawn-red charcoaled), brindled, red, black, black and tan, white.
