Chapter 1

Getting to know the Harrier (dog)

Origins & history

A story told

The Harrier is a British breed of very ancient lineage like the Beagle. It would be derived from crosses between English Bulldogs, Sighthounds and the Fox Terrier. The English Foxhound was probably used in the breed's selection. In Great Britain, packs of Harriers are used for pack hunting of hares and foxes. Highly specialized, its export outside of England has been difficult, however this breed is undergoing rapid expansion in France where packs are formed for pack hunting of foxes.

Character

Daily temperament

The International Canine Federation standard does not describe a typical character or temperament for the breed. It is a joyful, intelligent, very affectionate dog even with children and as confident as any hunting hound. Active, the Harrier needs plenty of physical exercise.

Physical

Breed standard

The Harrier is a medium-sized hunting hound, built like a "hunter", with powerful bone structure and a well-defined neck. The medium-length tail is slightly feathered. The ear is implanted clearly above the line of the eye; the insertion is wider than in the Beagle and Beagle-Harrier. It is V-shaped, almost flat. Quite short, the lower end of the ear must slightly exceed the line of the rim of the lips. The dark eyes are neither prominent nor too round. The coat is smooth, flat and not too short. The coat is white-based with all shades from black to orange. In France, the Harrier is generally tricolored with a black mantle.
