Chapter 1

Getting to know the Griffon Fauve de Bretagne

Origins & history

A story told

The Griffon Fauve of Brittany is a very old French breed of running hounds. In the 14th century, Huet des Ventes owned a pack of a type similar to the Griffon Fauve of Brittany. The breed was widely used until the 19th century to hunt wolves in Brittany. The numbers of the breed declined with the disappearance of wolves in France. In 1949, the Fauve de Bretagne Club was created by Marcel Pambrun to preserve this rare breed. Since the 1980s, the future of the breed has been assured, although it remains fairly uncommon and practically unknown outside metropolitan France. The selection of subjects is based on obtaining good hunters above all.

Character

Daily temperament

The temperament is described in the International Cynological Federation standard as passionate about hunting, very gentle with humans, sociable, affectionate, and balanced. It is a patient dog with children.

Physical

Breed standard

The Fawn Griffon of Brittany is a medium-sized running hound with a bony, muscular body built for endurance. Carried slightly in sickle shape, the medium-length tail is thick at the base and tapers well to the point. In action, the tail is carried above the back line and describes regular lateral movements. The skull is rather elongated with a marked occipital protuberance. The stop is slightly marked; the muzzle is tapered rather than square. The eyes are dark brown in color. Set finely at eye level, the ears are covered with hair that is shorter and finer than on the rest of the body. Reaching the tip of the nose, they are pointed at the end. The coat is very hard, dry, rather short, never woolly or curly. The face is not too bushy. The coat is fawn, ranging from golden wheat to brick red. A few black hairs scattered on the back and ears are tolerated.
