The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon Korthals or more simply Griffon Korthals or Korthals is a dog breed originating from France. It is a continental pointing dog born around the 1860s, whose name is due to a Dutchman, Eduard Karel Korthals, who probably crossed a French Pointer, a Barbet and a Pointer. The first presentation took place in 1870, the standard was established in 1886.

It became French in 1919, belonging to the 7th group of dog breeds of the F.C.I. Its standard describes it as a vigorous, rustic, medium-sized dog (55 to 60 cm at the withers for males, 50 to 55 cm for females). It is covered with a rough and coarse coat of steel-gray color (brown mixed in white) with brown markings, uniformly brown, brown and white or fawn and white, or white and black). Its head, very expressive, bears beard, mustache and well-marked eyebrows. The Korthals is a dog with a gentle and playful character that is as comfortable in thick underbrush, open spaces or marshes, where it excels, as it is at home where it proves to be the best of companions for the whole family. It can live on average twelve years.

Origins & history
A story told
In 1860, in the Grand Duchy of Hesse, the Dutch kennel master Édouard Karel Korthals decided to recreate the wirehaired griffon. He begins breeding by testing and sorting more than six hundred dogs and in particular Barbets and various country griffons. He selects seven founders according to their physical appearance and their hunting and breeding qualities. The type is quickly fixed by consanguinity. The studbook of Griffon Korthals and its standard are established in 1887. This breed is recognized as French by the International Canine Federation (FCI).
Character
Daily temperament
The Korthals Griffon is described by the FCI standard as a gentle and proud dog, very attached to its master and its surroundings which it guards with vigilance. It is very gentle with children. Intelligent and gentle, its education must be conducted with firmness but without brutality. This breed has a strong character and males can be reactive with each other. The Korthals Griffon is an active and sporty dog, it needs daily exercise and at least two large outings per week.
Physical
Breed standard
The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon Korthals is a medium-sized pointing dog whose body fits in a rectangle. The tail is carried horizontally, often with the end raised; it is shortened by a third or a quarter. The skull is not too broad with a long and square muzzle. At the head level, thick eyebrows form a protective screen for the eyes and thick mustaches and a beard spread over the cheeks and lips. The eyes are dark yellow or brown in color and round in shape. Medium-sized, the ears are attached to the eye line. They fall flat well, not frilled. The coat is hard and coarse, neither curly nor woolly with a fluffy undercoat. The coat is preferably steel gray with brown markings, brown rouan or rouan. Coats of white and brown and white and orange also exist.
