Chapter 1

Getting to know the Giant Spitz

Origins & history

A story told

The German Spitz probably descends from dogs of the Stone Age peat bogs. The dwarf variety, more commonly known as the Pomeranian, became popular with the aristocracy from the 18th century onwards. In France, only the dwarf spitz is known, and the first large spitz is inscribed for the first time in the French book of origins (LOF) only in 1986.

Character

Daily temperament

The German Spitz is described in the FCI standard as alert, lively, and attached to its master. It is easy to train although wary of strangers. The hunting instinct is absent. It is neither fearful nor aggressive.

Physical

Breed standard

The large spitz follows the standard of the German Spitz, which admits five sizes. The large spitz represents the largest size. All German Spitz have a body that fits within a square, with a tail set high and carried rolled on the back. The head is wedge-shaped and recalls that of a fox with lively eyes of medium size and dark color; small triangular ears positioned close together. Unlike the smaller varieties, the large spitz must be equipped with all its teeth. The standard specifies that for the large spitz, the ratio between the length of the muzzle and that of the skull is approximately two-thirds. All German Spitz have a double coat: as covering, a long, stiff, and spread hair, and as undercoat a sort of thick and short wadding. This double coat does not cover the head, ears, nor the front faces of the limbs and feet, covered with short and dense hair resembling velvet. The German spitz has an impressive ruff like a mane and a plumed tail. The large spitz admits three colors:

Black: the undercoat and skin are dark in color. The color is lacquered black without trace of white and without any marking. Brown: it is a uniform dark brown. White: pure white, without any shadow, without any yellowish tint on the ears.
