Chapter 1

Getting to know the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog

Origins & history

A story told

It seems this breed stems fairly directly from dogs that accompanied Roman legions, particularly during the Gallic Wars. These Roman dogs were used to guard camps and herds, and they were themselves probably descended from the Tibetan Mastiff (this is also the case with other European breeds such as the Rottweiler). It was quite widespread in Switzerland, and even caused a revolt among peasants when a Zurich city ordinance ordered them to be destroyed. Other sources cite the Great Swiss Mountain Dog as being descended from the butcher's mastiff. Indeed, disadvantaged by its size for herding, it was nevertheless built for pulling and hauled heavy carcasses of meat. The Great Swiss Mountain Dog made its arrival on French territory very recently (about twenty years ago) and is still rarely seen. Dog enthusiasts often prefer its "teddy bear" cousin, the Bernese Mountain Dog. Originally a guard and draft dog, it is today also a companion, protection, and family dog. It is a calm, balanced animal entirely devoted to its loved ones. It is courageous towards strangers without being aggressive. The Great Swiss Mountain Dog is the largest of the four Swiss cattle dogs.
