Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen

The four varieties of Griffon Vendéen are descended from a variety of Vendéen with short coat descending from clerks, also called white dogs of the King. Derived from the Grand Griffon Vendéen, the Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen is selected from the nineteenth century by Count Christian d'Elva, who was looking for dogs with "straight legs." Paul Desamy establishes the type of the breed, with Abel Desamy focusing more on the petit basset.

The Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen is described by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale standard as a determined and wise dog. The breed is considered affectionate, loyal, and quite obedient. Recall must be taught to it from its youngest age.

The Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen is a small-sized hunting dog of basset type. The legs are straight. Thick at the birth, the tail gradually thins. It is carried like a sword blade or slightly curved. Without heaviness, the skull is convex, elongated, and not too wide. The occipital bone is well-developed with a well-marked stop. Oval in shape, the large dark-colored eyes are surmounted by hair coming forward. Flexible, narrow, and fine, the ears are covered with long hair. Attached low below the eye line, they end in an elongated oval and are well turned inward. They reach the tip of the nose. The coat is hard, not too long and flat, never silky or woolly. The fringes are not too abundant. Two numerous colors are accepted for the coat: black with white marking, black and tan, black and sable, tawny with white marking, tawny with black saddle and white marking, charred tawny, charred sable with white marking, charred sable.
