Chapter 1

Getting to know the Grand Anglo-French Tricolor Hound

Origins & history

A story told

The Grand Français Tricolore descends from crosses between native French dogs, notably the Poitevin and the Gascon Saintongeois, and the English Foxhound. This breed is very rare, little used, and virtually unknown outside mainland France.

Character

Daily temperament

The FCI standard does not describe a typical character or temperament for the breed. It is a friendly breed, even with children. Training is fairly difficult because it is an independent dog. The breed needs to expend energy and requires considerable exercise.

Physical

Breed standard

The Grand Français Tricolore is a large hunting dog, well-structured with a certain distinction. Of good length, the tail is carried elegantly with plentiful coat. The head is elongated in shape and not too large, with a marked occipital protuberance. The skull is very slightly rounded. The eyes are large, brown, and rimmed with black. Of medium length, the ears are set wide at the level of the eye line, flat, then slightly folded. The coat is short and fine. The coat is tricolored, most often with a black saddle or with more or less extensive patches. The tan color is bright or coppery. The tan is charred at the cheeks and lips. Mottling of blue or tan color on the limbs and body is not sought after. The mixed coat, called "louvard," is not excluded.
