Getting to know the Large Anglo-French Hound

Origins & history

A story told

The Grand Anglo-French White and Black originates from the Anglo-Saintongeois cross, the result of crosses between the Saintongeois dog and the English Foxhound made in the mid-19th century. The Gascon Saintongeois was used for breed selection. The population is in the order of 2,000 dogs with approximately 200 births each year. It constitutes packs of about twenty roe deer hunt teams and one deer hunt team.

Character

Daily temperament

The Grand Anglo-French White and Black is described in the FCI standard as a friendly dog, close to man and easy in the kennel.

Physical

Breed standard

The Grand Anglo-French White and Black is a large scent hound, powerful and robust with strong bone structure. Strong at birth, its tail tapers to a point. Long and straight, it is carried above the line of the back when the dog is in action. Strong and rather short, the head presents parallel skull and muzzle lines. The skull is rather flat and wide, with prominent eyebrow ridges. The stop is well marked. The brown eyes are set in the orbits without excess. The ears are of medium length and reach at most the muzzle two fingers behind the birth of the nose. The tip takes a rather pointed shape. The coat is short, fairly strong and tight. The color is necessarily white and black, with a large mantle and more or less extensive black patches. Black or bluish flecks or small tan marks on the limbs may be present. Pale tan marks adorn the top of each eye, the cheeks, under the eyes, under the ears or at the birth of the tail. The roe deer mark on the thigh is fairly common.
