French White and Black Hound

The French White and Black descended from the Saintonge Hound, whose origins are uncertain. Emerging in the second half of the 19th century, the French White and Black was crossed with the Poitevin and the Gascon Saintongeois. The Great Blue Gascony and the English Foxhound likely contributed to the breed's creation. The first standard was written in 1957. The population consists of approximately two thousand dogs, producing 300 to 400 pups each year. Although it is the most widespread and well-known of the three French hounds, the breed remains rare.

The French White and Black is a large scent hound, distinguished, with balanced construction. The body fits within a square. Fairly thick at birth, the tail is carried quite high. The head is rather imposing and fairly long, in harmony with the overall frame, but never heavy or coarse, expressive and well-held. Dark eyes give it an intelligent and confident expression. The ears, attached at eye level, are slightly turned forward. The coat is short, fairly strong and dense. The coat must be obligatorily white and black, with black patches of varying extent that may display bluish or fawn markings on the limbs. A pale fawn spot appears above each eye, under the eyes, under the ears and at the tail root. A roe deer mark on the thigh is fairly frequent.
