The American Foxhound is descended from English Foxhounds imported to America in 1650. They are subsequently crossed with French scent hounds offered by La Fayette to George Washington in the 18th century. The American Foxhound was used against Native Americans. It is a hunting dog whose distribution is recent and which is fairly little used in Europe.

The FCI standard contains no description of the temperament of the American Foxhound. It is a very combative hunting dog and gentle in the family. It is a determined dog that becomes irritable through lack of activity.

The American Foxhound is a large-sized scent hound. The tail is carried slightly brushed, slightly curved above the back. The head is fairly long with a slightly domed occiput and a moderate stop. The eyes, brown or hazel in color, are large and well spaced. Set slightly low, the fairly wide ears have a rounded tip. Folded forward, they must almost reach or touch the end of the nose. They may barely be raised and fall close to the head, the front edge slightly curved inward, against the cheeks. The coat is tight and rough, of medium length for which all colors are admitted.
