Origins & history
A story told
Function The Fox Terrier was developed in England by fox hunters (in English fox = fox), which, due to its small size, could go unearth these animals in their burrow, and demonstrated one of the most remarkable courage in dogs.

Popularity The Fox Terrier was not popular as a pet in English families until 1930. It was during this period that a young fox called Asta was found in the royal family. It was thanks to this dog that the popularity rating of the breed went up. But this dog is not an apartment breed, and is not made for living in the city. Indeed, the Fox Terrier is full of energy and always needs to run, dig, hunt.
Coat Known today for its white, black and fawn coat (or white and fawn), it should be known that the Fox Terrier was not always this color. Indeed, in 1760, the hard-coated Fox Terrier was described as reddish-brown, or black with bronze-colored legs. Thus, the white hair would have made its appearance in the breed around the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century. The most accepted version of this color change is the one that would want white color to have been included in hard-coated Fox Terriers to distinguish them from their prey. Indeed, it was difficult for hunters, without clear visual distinction, to recognize whether their hunting companion was the one coming out of the burrow, or if it was the prey to hunt.
Character
Daily temperament
Fox Terriers are explorer dogs that require a lot of attention. Indeed, if these dogs are left to themselves outside and are not supervised, they will tend to dig to entertain themselves.
Physical
Breed standard
Its coat is tricolor, generally white and combined with fawn and black markings. It is however possible to find bicolored ones; mostly white, their coat is combined with fawn markings. Its hard coat is all ruffled in winter, giving it a plush appearance. The hard-coated Fox Terrier is a dog of small format with bone structure and strength well distributed. The male and female measure from the ground to the withers from 30 to 40 cm. The male weighs approximately 10 kg, while the female weighs on average 8 kg. The height of the Fox Terrier is approximately the same as the length of its body. Indeed, the distance from the ground to its withers is the same as that from the tip of its shoulder to the tip of its rump. This thus makes it an animal with a desired morphology. It is moreover compared, when it stands up, to a hunting horse. Its muzzle is long and its head elongated. Hypoallergenic, the tricolor coat of this dog is dense, hard to the touch and stiff, without however appearing woolly. In order to distinguish it from the smooth-coated Fox Terrier, the coat of the hard-coated Fox Terrier must be of a certain length, but without excess. If it is shaved, the coat loses its coloration and becomes grayish, curly, soft and permeable. Finally, although some dogs show slightly wavy coats, exhibition Fox Terriers must have a completely smooth coat.

Maintenance
Daily care
If the question of grooming does not arise for smooth-coated varieties, it is unavoidable for the hard-coated variety. Indeed, from a dog with rough coat resembling much its cousin jack russell hard-coated terrier, breeders selected a dog with increasingly long, no longer naturally shedding hair. It must therefore be removed manually. This operation is called stripping. If the dog is clipped, its coat loses its hard texture and its colors, it becomes white and curly and is no longer waterproof. It is therefore necessary to ensure the competence of the person who will be in charge of doing it if one does not do it oneself. Grooming the hard-coated Fox Terrier is necessary in order to allow skin aeration and prevent dermatological problems.
