Chapter 1
Getting to know the Eurohound
Origins & history
A story told
The first crosses at the origin of the breed appear to have been made in Scandinavia, between the German Short-haired Pointer and the Alaskan Husky, with the aim of obtaining better sled dogs. The Eurohound quickly spread throughout the world thanks to its potential for speed in sprint and mid-distance races.
Physical
Breed standard
It is one of the most accomplished sled dogs in the world, combining the innate pulling ability of the Husky and the enthusiasm of the Pointer as well as its athletic abilities. The percentage of Pointer varies depending on the races the dog will compete in (more or less long courses, and more or less cold climate). The dogs are referred to as hybrids because they come from two carefully selected gene pools unrelated to each other. The Alaskan Husky sprint dog was bred for harness work since sled dog racing began in Alaska. The German Short-haired Pointer and English Pointer line are subject to physical criteria as breeds registered with the LOF, but they were also bred for hunting, among other things. The Scandinavian pointers from which the first Eurohound came had historically been used for sled dog racing and hunting. The appearance varies, as it is a dog bred for performance rather than appearance, but some characteristics are common to more than 50%: these are semi-erect ears, a black coat flecked with white (according to photo), or solid with spots in places, some completely spotted dogs also appear. Once the pointer percentage decreases, the dogs begin to look more like Alaskan Huskies.
