Chapter 1

Getting to know the Eurasier

Origins & history

A story told

In the 1950s, research was undertaken by Julius Wipfel to create a new dog breed. The breeding was conducted with scientific advice from the Institute of Genetics of Domestic Animals at the University of Göttingen and Professor Konrad Lorenz, Nobel Prize winner in Medicine. By crossing male Chow Chows and female Wolfspitz, a first generation called "wolf-chow" was created in 1969. Then, in 1973, Julius Wipfel crossed the female wolf-chows with Samoyeds. Actually, only one male Samoyed was used in the different lines. The name Eurasier or Eurasian was chosen to mark the bridge between the Asian breeds (Chow Chow, Samoyed) and European (Wolfspitz) used in its creation. The breed was recognized by the International Cynological Federation (FCI) in 1973. In Canada, the breed was recognized by the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) in 1995.

Character

Daily temperament

The Eurasier is a gay, joyful and mischievous dog when young, even if it can become more distant as it grows. It remains nevertheless sociable towards humans and other animals. It is rather independent but remains close to its humans and its social group without being clingy. It is an intelligent and sensitive dog, whose education must be conducted with firmness but without any brutality. The Eurasier does not like solitude and does not tolerate being confined, which completely excludes keeping it in a kennel. Close to its masters, with strangers it can nevertheless be distant or even wary. Good early socialization is therefore very important. With a fairly playful temperament, it is very well-suited to children. It is not a working dog nor a guard dog, though it is capable of distinguishing itself in a defensive role. It is a vigilant guardian that does not bark without reason. It is very sociable and cohabits perfectly well with all household animals. Naturally very clean, it will instinctively respect your home. The Eurasier adapts to family life and can live in an apartment provided it gets large daily walks (at least 2), it enjoys sharing large spaces allowing it to exercise at leisure.

Physical

Breed standard

The Eurasier is a medium-sized dog with moderately heavy bone structure. The male measures 52 to 60 cm for a weight between 25 and 30 kg. The female measures 48 to 56 cm for a weight between 20 and 26 kg. The coat is fawn, black, gray or sand-colored. The fawn more or less charcoal with dark nose is typical. The undercoat is thick and the guard hair is medium-length. The head is triangular in shape with almond-shaped dark eyes. The ears are erect.
